English level test

What does the test measure?

The Englify English level test looks at the skills you actually use when you communicate in English. Each question is written at a specific CEFR level, from A1 to C1, so your answers show where you are comfortable and where English starts to become challenging.

Grammar

How accurately you use tenses, conditionals, questions and sentence structure — from everyday forms to more complex structures.

Vocabulary

The range of words and expressions you know, including phrasal verbs and common collocations such as "meet a deadline".

Reading

Short texts — a personal message, an article, an opinion — followed by questions about main ideas, details and meaning.

Listening

Short spoken sentences played in your browser. You listen for times, reasons and key information, just as you would in real life. A transcript is available if you can't play audio.

Communication

Real situations — a restaurant, a meeting, a negotiation — where you choose the most natural and appropriate thing to say.

A practical assessment, not an official exam

Your result is an estimated CEFR level based on 30 questions. It is a useful guide for choosing a course or understanding your progress, but it is not an official certification and is not equivalent to IELTS, TOEFL or Cambridge exams. The test does not assess speaking or writing directly.

How the test works

No account, no download. You can take the test on your phone or computer and see your result as soon as you finish.

  1. Answer 30 questions

Questions start simple and become more challenging, covering grammar, vocabulary, reading, listening and communication.

  2. Go at your own pace

Move back and forth between questions. If you don't know an answer, choose "I'm not sure" instead of guessing — it keeps your result honest.

  3. See your CEFR level

Get your estimated level from A1 to C1, a score, and a breakdown of each skill so you know where you're strong.

  4. Plan your next step

Read what your level means, what to work on next, and — if you want — get a learning recommendation from Englify.

What is the CEFR?

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is an international standard for describing language ability. It is used by schools, universities and employers around the world, including in Morocco, to describe English levels in a consistent way.

The CEFR has six levels: A1 and A2 (basic user), B1 and B2 (independent user), and C1 and C2 (proficient user). Each level is defined by what you can do with the language — "can-do" descriptions — rather than by a list of grammar rules.

Why the test goes from A1 to C1

C2 describes near-native mastery, which cannot be measured reliably with a short online test. That is why the Englify test covers A1 to C1, the levels most learners want to identify for study, work or travel.

Wondering "What is my English level?" The quickest way to find out is to answer questions written at each level and see where your accuracy begins to drop. That is exactly how this test is designed.

How to improve your English level

Moving from one CEFR level to the next usually takes steady practice over several months. These habits make the biggest difference.

Speak regularly, not occasionally

Short, frequent speaking practice builds confidence faster than rare long sessions. Aim to speak English several times a week, even for 20 minutes.

Listen to real English

Podcasts, interviews and series at the right level train your ear for natural speed and pronunciation. Use subtitles in English, not in your first language.

Learn phrases, not single words

Expressions like "as far as I know" or "take into account" make you sound fluent and are easier to remember in context.

Get feedback on your mistakes

A teacher can spot the patterns you don't notice yourself and help you fix them before they become habits.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about the free English level test, the CEFR and what to do with your result.

What is an English level test?

An English level test (also called an English placement test) estimates how well you understand and use English. It usually places you on a scale such as the CEFR, from A1 (beginner) to C1 or C2 (advanced), so you can choose the right course or track your progress.

How can I test my English level online?

Take a test that includes questions at every level and covers several skills, not just grammar. The Englify test has 30 questions on grammar, vocabulary, reading, listening and communication. Answer honestly and choose "I'm not sure" when you don't know — guessing makes the result less accurate.

Is the Englify English level test free?

Yes. The test is completely free and you can see your result without creating an account. After the test, you can choose to share your details if you'd like a personalised learning recommendation.

What is the CEFR?

The CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) is an international standard that describes language ability on six levels: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2. It is widely used by schools, universities and employers.

What do A1, A2, B1, B2 and C1 mean?

A1 is beginner and A2 is elementary: you can handle basic, familiar situations. B1 is intermediate and B2 is upper-intermediate: you can communicate independently in most situations, including at work. C1 is advanced: you use English flexibly and precisely, even in demanding professional or academic contexts.

How long does the test take?

Most people finish the 30 questions in 10 to 15 minutes. There is no time limit, so you can take the time you need.

Can I use the test to find my English level?

Yes — it gives you a practical estimate of your CEFR level and shows which skills are stronger or weaker. Because it is a short multiple-choice test, it does not measure speaking or writing directly. A conversation with a teacher is the best way to confirm your level.

Is this an official English certificate?

No. The Englify English level test is a practical assessment, not an official exam. It is not equivalent to IELTS, TOEFL or Cambridge certificates. If you need an official certificate for a university or visa application, you'll need to register for one of those exams.

How can I improve my English level?

Practise speaking regularly, listen to real English every day, learn useful phrases rather than isolated words, and get feedback on your mistakes. Structured classes with a teacher help you progress faster because they combine all of these.

Can I take the test from Morocco?

Yes. The test is fully online, so you can take it from Casablanca, Rabat, Marrakech, Tangier or anywhere else with an internet connection, on your phone or computer. The page is also available in French and Arabic.
