In short
Preply is a marketplace where independent tutors publish their own profiles and set their own hourly rates, and learners book lessons directly with the tutor of their choice. That means quality and price depend on the individual tutor rather than on a single institution: the range is wide, and finding the right person can take a few trials. It suits self-directed adults who want maximum choice of tutor, accent and schedule; a structured academy suits learners who want a fixed curriculum, one accountable teacher, progress reports and a school to escalate to. Rates on marketplaces vary by tutor, so check the current rate on the tutor's own profile rather than trusting any quoted figure.
Key facts
- Model: marketplace of independent tutors, each setting their own rate
- Strength: very wide choice of tutors, languages, accents and time slots
- Trade-off: consistency depends on the individual tutor you pick
- Prices vary per tutor — check the tutor's live profile, never a third-party figure
- Best for: self-directed adults comfortable choosing and switching tutors
- Englify by comparison: one academy, assigned teacher, fixed pricing at 100 MAD/hour

Disclosure
Disclosure: Englify Academy is an online English and French academy based in Morocco, so we compete with the platform reviewed here. We describe how it works and who it suits, we do not invent prices, ratings or numbers, and where something varies or we could not verify it, we say so.
How Preply works
Preply is a platform, not a school. Tutors create profiles, describe their experience, set their own hourly rate and manage their own availability. You browse, filter, book, and pay through the platform. The lesson content is agreed between you and that tutor.
The consequence is simple and often misunderstood: there is no single Preply teaching method or Preply curriculum. There are thousands of independent teachers of varying experience, and your experience is essentially the experience of the person you picked.
Where a marketplace genuinely wins
- Choice: many tutors, accents, specialisms and time zones
- Flexibility: book lesson by lesson, change tutor whenever you want
- Trying several teaching styles before committing to one
- Rare combinations, for example a tutor for a specific industry or a specific exam
Where learners tell us it gets hard
- Choosing well takes effort, and a weak first pick sours the whole idea of classes
- Progress can drift when nobody owns your plan across months
- Cancellations and reschedules are between you and one freelancer
- There is usually no institutional report on your level over time
- For children, continuity and safeguarding matter more than choice
Marketplace or academy: how to decide
If you are a self-directed adult who enjoys picking your own teacher and wants to schedule lesson by lesson, a marketplace is a reasonable fit. If you want a structured programme, one teacher who is accountable for your progress, written reports and a school to contact when something goes wrong, an academy fits better.
For reference, Englify's pricing is fixed rather than per tutor: private one-to-one classes are 100 MAD per hour, monthly packs run from 500 MAD for 4 hours to 2,000 MAD for 20 hours, and adult group classes capped at six students are 250 MAD for one month, 650 MAD for three months and 1,000 MAD for six months. The placement test and the first class are free.
What to check before you book anywhere
- Is there a placement test, and do you get a reasoned level?
- Will you keep the same teacher across months?
- How much of each session do you actually speak?
- Do you receive written feedback between sessions?
- What are the cancellation and rescheduling terms, in writing?
- Can someone explain a structure in French or Darija when English fails?
Frequently asked questions
- Is Preply good for learners in Morocco?
- It can be, if you are a self-directed adult willing to trial a few tutors until you find one who suits you. Because tutors are independent, the experience varies by person rather than being set by one school. Learners who want a fixed curriculum, an assigned teacher and progress reports usually prefer a structured academy.
- How much does Preply cost?
- Rates are set individually by each tutor and change over time, so the only reliable figure is the one on the tutor's own profile at the moment you book. We do not quote a number for a competitor whose prices we do not control.
- Preply or Cambly?
- They solve different problems. Preply is about choosing a specific tutor for structured lessons; Cambly is built around on-demand conversation practice with native speakers. If your issue is a plan and accountability, neither replaces a structured course.
- What is the alternative to Preply in Morocco?
- A Morocco-based academy with live classes, an assigned teacher and fixed pricing. At Englify that means private classes at 100 MAD per hour or adult groups capped at six students from 250 MAD per month, with a free placement test and a free first class.
- How much do English lessons cost in Morocco?
- At Englify, small-group online English classes are the most affordable option and private one-to-one classes cost more per hour, because a private teacher works with one student only. Current group and private prices are confirmed on WhatsApp (+212 724 744 137) and on our prices page, since they depend on the format, the number of hours per week and the length of the plan. The trial class is free and no card is required.
