What “business English” should actually mean

Business English is not a higher level of English. It is normal English applied to a narrow set of high-pressure situations: a status meeting where you have ninety seconds to explain a delay, a client call where you have to say no politely, an email that must not sound rude, a presentation where you cannot read your slides out loud.

That is why the useful question is never “what level does the course teach?” but “which of my situations does it rehearse?”. If the answer is vague, the course is a general English course with a business label on it.

• Email and messages: tone, directness, chasing without sounding aggressive

How to judge a course before you pay

You can learn most of what matters in one free class and three questions. Any school that refuses all four is telling you something.

• Is there a placement test, and do you get a level and reasoning — not just a label?
• Who is the teacher, and will you keep the same one?
• What percentage of a session do you spend speaking?
• Do you get written feedback after sessions, or only at the end?
• Can you bring your own material — a real email, a real deck, a real call agenda?
• What happens if you travel or your schedule changes for two weeks?

Private, small group, or an app?

Private is the right answer when your goal is specific and dated: a promotion interview, a client presentation, an international role starting in two months. The whole hour follows your material.

A small group is the right answer when the real problem is confidence — you understand English at work but stop talking in meetings. In a group capped at six, you speak every session and you hear other professionals fixing the same mistakes.

An app is a good complement and a poor substitute. It builds vocabulary and habit; it does not teach you to hold a difficult conversation in real time with someone who reacts.

There is no honest fixed answer, and any school giving you one in weeks before testing you is guessing. What is predictable is the shape of progress: specific situations improve fast because they are rehearsable, while general fluency moves slowly and steadily. A professional who practises interview answers and meeting phrases for a few weeks usually sounds markedly better in those moments long before their overall level changes.

Do I need a certain level before starting business English?

No. What changes is the content, not the entry requirement. At a lower level the work is on clear, simple sentences you can rely on under pressure; at a higher level it is on tone, nuance and negotiation. The placement test tells you which of the two you are starting from.

Is an online business English course as good as in person?

For working professionals it is usually better, because the failure mode of in-person courses is missed sessions. Classes are live on Google Meet with the same teacher, in evening or weekend slots, and screen sharing means you can work on your actual deck or email.

Can my company pay for the classes?
