Why speaking stays stuck

  • Translating in your head before every sentence
  • Fear of mistakes, so you give very short answers
  • Not enough real speaking time — classes where the teacher talks most
  • The same mistakes repeated because nobody points them out
  • Pronunciation that makes listeners ask you to repeat

What a speaking session looks like

  1. Warm-up conversation

About your week or your work — you do most of the talking.

  2. Focus task

A situation, a debate or a story, chosen for your goal.

  3. Correction

Key mistakes noted and corrected, then you say it again.

  4. Pronunciation

Two or three sounds or stress patterns at a time.

  5. Report

Your mistakes, better versions and new vocabulary in writing.

Common speaking mistakes of Arabic speakers

Pronunciation: p/b ("park" vs "bark") and v/f ("very" vs "fery") are the most frequent. See our full guide /english-for-arabic-speakers/resources/english-pronunciation-for-arabic-speakers.

Common speaking mistakes of French speakers

  • "th" said as "z" or "s" ("zis" for "this")
  • Dropping or adding "h" ("ouse" for "house")
  • False friends: "actually" (in fact), "eventually" (in the end)
  • Stress on the last syllable instead of the right one

Group or one-to-one speaking practice?

In a small group (maximum 6 learners) you hear others and practise turn-taking. One-to-one you speak much more of the time and every correction is about you. Shy learners and professionals with a specific deadline usually progress faster one-to-one.
