Why this age needs a different approach
A 4- or 7-year-old cannot sit through a 60-minute class or learn from grammar explanations. At this age, English sticks through repetition, movement, sound and play — the same way children absorb their first language. Our sessions are built around that reality rather than shrinking an adult lesson plan down.
What a session looks like
- 20 to 30 minutes maximum, matched to a young child's attention span
- A song or chant to open, using the same routine every class so it feels familiar
- Phonics: connecting letter sounds to words through games, not worksheets
- Picture and object vocabulary — naming, pointing, simple actions
- A short story or puppet dialogue read aloud with lots of repetition
Phonics and pre-reading, not full reading yet
At 4 to 7, the goal is not fluent reading — it is recognising letter sounds, blending simple words, and building the listening vocabulary that reading will later attach to. Children who do this well at 4–7 move into reading and writing much more easily in the 8–11 age group.
Small groups, and a parent nearby
Groups are kept small so every child gets individual attention and turns to speak. For the youngest children and the first few sessions, we recommend a parent sitting nearby off-camera, mainly to help with the technology and reassure a shy child — the teacher leads the class.
