Which IELTS Test Canada Actually Asks For

Two versions of IELTS exist. IELTS Academic is designed for university admission; IELTS General Training is the version accepted for Canadian economic immigration programmes such as Express Entry. Candidates in Morocco regularly prepare and even sit the wrong version, because the two share the same Listening and Speaking papers but differ in Reading and in Writing Task 1.

The practical difference for preparation: General Training Task 1 is a letter — formal, semi-formal or informal — while Academic Task 1 describes a chart. General Training Reading uses workplace and everyday texts instead of academic passages. Preparing letters and everyday texts is faster than preparing academic ones, provided you train the right paper from the start.

If your goal is a Canadian university rather than permanent residence, the institution usually asks for IELTS Academic. Check the requirement of your own programme before booking.

How IELTS Scores Become CLB Levels

Canada does not read IELTS bands directly. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada converts each of your four section scores into a Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level, and your language points come from the lowest of the four. A candidate with 8.0, 7.5, 7.0 and 6.0 is treated at the level of that 6.0, not at the level of the average.

That single rule changes how preparation should be organised. Most Moroccan candidates arrive strong in Reading and Listening — years of series, films and study — and weakest in Writing or Speaking. Adding half a band to an already strong Reading score earns nothing; lifting the weakest section is the whole game.

Choosing a Realistic Target

CLB 7 is the minimum language level for Express Entry's Federal Skilled Worker programme, which in IELTS General Training means 6.0 in every section. CLB 9 — Listening 8.0, Reading 7.0, Writing 7.0, Speaking 7.0 — is where language points become substantial in the Comprehensive Ranking System, which is why many candidates aim there rather than at the minimum.
