How to Improve Your English Speaking and Stop Freezing

The most common sentence we hear in a trial class is: "I understand everything, but when I speak, nothing comes out." That is not a knowledge problem — it is a retrieval and confidence problem, and it has a practical fix.

In short

Freezing when you speak English is a retrieval problem, not a knowledge problem: your brain stores English as rules to check instead of language to produce. The fix is to learn ready-made phrases instead of isolated words, speak out loud for about ten minutes every day, record yourself weekly, and have a teacher correct the same recurring mistakes. Most learners who do this hold a comfortable 10-minute conversation within a few months.

Key facts

  • Freezing is slow retrieval, not missing vocabulary
  • Learn whole chunks: "as far as I know", "it depends on"
  • Speak out loud 10 minutes daily, even alone
  • Record yourself weekly to hear repeated mistakes
  • Weekly teacher correction stops mistakes from setting
  • A native-speaker teacher is not required — a trained one is

Why you freeze

When you learn a language mainly by reading and doing grammar exercises, your brain stores it as knowledge to check, not as language to produce. Under the pressure of a live conversation you try to build each sentence from rules, which is far too slow, so you stop.

Learn chunks, not isolated words

Fluent speakers do not assemble sentences word by word; they reuse ready-made blocks. Learn whole phrases you can drop into a conversation: "as far as I know", "I'd rather", "it depends on", "let me get back to you on that".

Speak out loud every single day

Ten minutes of speaking out loud beats an hour of silent reading. Describe your day, summarise an article you read, argue with a podcast. Nobody needs to listen — the goal is to make production automatic.

  • Narrate what you are doing while doing it
  • Summarise a 5-minute video in your own words
  • Answer one opinion question a day, out loud, for 2 minutes

Record yourself once a week

Recording is uncomfortable and extremely effective. You hear your own repeated mistakes, your fillers and your pauses. Keep the recordings: comparing month one with month four is the clearest proof of progress you will get.

Shadowing for pronunciation and rhythm

Pick a 60-second clip of natural speech, listen line by line, and repeat immediately while copying the rhythm and intonation. Ten minutes of shadowing a day improves pronunciation faster than any list of phonetic rules.

Get corrected by a teacher weekly

Self-practice makes you faster; correction makes you accurate. In our speaking classes each student talks in every session and leaves with a short list of corrections to apply the following week, which is what turns fluent-but-wrong into fluent-and-correct.

Accept mistakes as part of the method

Waiting until your English is perfect before speaking guarantees you never speak. Aim to be understood first; accuracy follows practice. Small groups help here — everyone in the room is in the same situation.

Frequently asked questions

How long until I can hold a conversation?
With two live classes a week and daily short speaking practice, most A2–B1 learners hold a comfortable 10-minute conversation within 3 to 4 months.
Should I focus on grammar or speaking?
Speaking, with grammar corrected inside speaking practice. Studying grammar separately rarely transfers to conversation on its own.
Do I need a native-speaker teacher?
No. What matters is a teacher trained to correct you and keep you talking. Our teachers also speak Arabic and French, which helps beginners unblock quickly.
How much do English lessons cost in Morocco?
At Englify, small-group online English classes are the most affordable option and private one-to-one classes cost more per hour, because a private teacher works with one student only. Current group and private prices are confirmed on WhatsApp (+212 724 744 137) and on our prices page, since they depend on the format, the number of hours per week and the length of the plan. The trial class is free and no card is required.
Are Englify classes online or in person?
Every class is 100% online and live on Google Meet, at Morocco time. Nothing is pre-recorded: a teacher is in the room with you, correcting you as you speak. Students join from Casablanca, Rabat, Marrakech, Tangier, Fez, Agadir and smaller cities, and from abroad.
